In the beginning ...

It all started with an exploratory meeting that was held in St. Mary's Church Hall on Wednesday 16th. May 2001 which was conducted by officers of the City Council and City Councillors. It was quickly established by the twenty to thirty local people who attended that we should accept the challenge to prepare our village for an entry in Britain in Bloom and get our streets, gardens and shop fronts ready for the judging day, which was said to be, at that time - only six weeks away. In reality we were given the full two months up to 16th. July.

A Steering Group was formed and was headed by the two councillors. Tasks were allocated to the dozen or so participating members of the group. Regular fortnightly meetings were held in the historic Woolton Hall. Working parties spent weekends cleaning up Woolton Woods and the open parkland. Grot spots were recognised as areas that would need our special attention. The City Council initiated a scheme of flower arrangements for street lamp posts and jumbo sized flower tubs whilst the local residents association organised the hanging of over one hundred hanging baskets for residents and shop fronts.
Judging day came all too quickly. Our village had been transformed. The two judges from The Tidy Britain Group and The Royal Horticultural Society arrived and were escorted through the village. It was a relief to think that we had made it.
